Appointed assistant lecturer and demonstrator in zoology, which he held until 1903, taking his doctorate in 1900. Elected to the Royal Society 1921. Elected honorary Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh 1937. Secretary to the Ray Society for 27 years. Editor of the Annals and Magazine of Natural History. Member of the International Committee on Zoological Nomenclature. Zoological secretary to the Linnean Society of London 1923-1928, was then promoted to president 1934-1937 and a Linnean Gold Medalist. Married Alice Donaldson 1906.
