Dr. Carte was born at Newcastle, Co. Limerick. He entered Trinity College, Dublin, and took the degrees of M.A. (1833), and M.D. (1860). In 1846 he was appointed Curator of the' Royal Dublin Society's Natural History Museum and later (1851) Director, and when those collections were incorporated in the new Dublin Museum of Science and Art and put under the South Kensington Department in 1878, he became first Director.
