Founded on the site of the first farm on the Australian Continent by Governer Maquarie in 1816. The Botanic gardens are the oldest scientific institution in Australia. John Carne Bidwell was appointed the first director in 1847, he was succeeded by a Scotsman Charles Moore from 1848 - 1896 who was responsible for developing much of the gardens into what is there today. Sydney's first Zoo was opened within the Botanic gardens in 1862. Moore was succeeded by Joseph Henry Maiden from 1897 - 1925 who organised the building of a new herbarium opened in 1901. The gardens languished during WWII but were restored under the guidance of Robert Anderson. The Gardens were granted the use of 'Royal' in 1959.
