Head of the General Library's Subject Files This series consists of the subject files opened and used by successive heads of the General Library. With the exception of four items, all files date from after 1945, when Alexander Cockburn Townsend (1905-1964) and then Maldwyn Jones Rowlands (1918-1995) were responsible for the Library. Files relate to library finance, staffing, accommodation, procedures and services; to the science departments and specialist libraries within the Museum; to individual collections of books, manuscripts and drawings; and to other libraries and museums in London. 1880-1999
